Tokyo to Shin-Yamaguchi: About 4 hours 20 minutes on a through Nozomi — but only some Nozomi services stop here, so Coming from Osaka or Hiroshima instead makes this a much shorter day.

About rail passes: A Japan Rail Pass is not valid on Nozomi. With a pass, use Sakura, Hikari or Kodama instead — they take longer but they cost nothing extra, and more of them stop at Shin-Yamaguchi than Nozomi do.

For the arched bridge at Iwakuni: Use Iwakuni station on the ordinary line, not Shin-Iwakuni — the shinkansen station there is served only by the slowest trains and sits away from the town. From Hiroshima, Iwakuni is the easy approach.
