Choose two places a day and book one meal.
Japan is a good country to travel in with older parents, for one specific reason: a great many of the best views are reached by vehicle, ropeway or lift, and the country is set up for people who move slowly — benches, clean toilets, staff who help without being asked.
The mistake is the itinerary, not the country. Five places a day is a young person’s schedule. Two places, lunch sitting down between them, and a bath in the evening.
Book lunch, or eat at 11:30 and walk straight in.
Morning one place, arriving at opening time when it is empty and cool · 12:00 lunch, sitting down, unhurried · Afternoon one flat thing — a garden, a viewpoint with a car park, a museum · Evening a hot spring, and dinner brought to the room.
An inn that serves dinner in your room removes the last effort of the day, which is the one that matters most.
