What Miyazaki is

Palm trees line the road along the coast, and surfers are in the water most of the year.

Inland is Takachiho, a narrow gorge of columned rock with a waterfall falling into it. You row a small boat to the foot of the fall yourself. The town is also where the old stories of Japan are said to begin, and a night dance retelling them is performed at the shrine every evening.

March – May

Warm early. The coast road is at its best, and the gorge is green and full.

June – August

Heavy rain in June. Hot and bright after that, and the sea is warm into September.

September – November

October and November are close to perfect.

December – February

The mildest winter in Kyushu. Mangoes are out of season, but the coast is empty.
