What Shizuoka is

From the coast at Miho no Matsubara, a pine grove on a black sand beach, the mountain rises across the bay.

The prefecture grows most of the green tea in Japan. The fields are cut in low green rows on the hillsides. From some of them you can photograph the tea and the mountain together, which is the local version of the classic shot.

Pick the season first and the days will arrange themselves.

March – May

New tea is picked from late April, and it is the one time of year to drink it fresh here.

June – August

Wet in June. Warm sea on Izu from July, and the mountain is usually hidden.

September – November

November is clear, and the tea fields are still green.

December – February

The clearest views of the mountain, and Izu is the mildest winter within reach of Tokyo.
