The lake takes up a sixth of the prefecture, and everything worth seeing here stands somewhere on its shore.
On the mountain above Otsu, Enryakuji is a temple complex spread through cedar forest and reached by cable car. It is ten minutes from Kyoto by train, and almost nobody stops.
Getting in: No airport — Maibara Station (shinkansen), or 10 min from Kyoto by local train
Pick the season first and the days will arrange themselves.
Cherry blossom along the moat at Hikone in early April. Clear views across the lake.
Wet in June. The lake is used for swimming and sailing in August.
Autumn colour on the mountain in November, above the lake. The best month here.
Snow on the northern shore and on the mountain temples. The gate in the lake in snow is worth the cold.
