What Tokushima is

At Naruto, the tide moving between the inland sea and the Pacific through a narrow strait makes whirlpools several metres across. You watch them from a walkway under the bridge, through glass panels in the floor, or from a boat. They are strongest at particular hours, and the times are published each day.

Pick the season first and the days will arrange themselves.

March – May

Fresh green in the Iya Valley, and the calmest weather for the boats at Naruto.

June – August

Wet in June. The festival fills the city from the 12th to the 15th of August — book early.

September – November

Autumn colour in the gorge in November, which is when the valley is at its best.

December – February

Cold in the mountains, mild on the coast. The vine bridge is lit on winter evenings.
