Come in through Fukuoka: Saga has no bullet-train station on the main line and only a small airport. Almost everyone arrives at Hakata in Fukuoka and takes a limited express west — treat Hakata as Saga’s front door.

Hakata to Saga: About 36 to 46 minutes by limited express (Relay Kamome, Midori, Kasasagi and others), calling at Futsukaichi, Tosu and Shin-Tosu. Trains run through the day, so you do not need to plan around one departure.

About rail passes: This is JR Kyushu, so a Japan Rail Pass and the JR Kyushu area passes are both valid, limited express seat included. If you are already using a pass in Fukuoka, Saga costs you nothing extra.

The porcelain towns are further west: Arita and Imari, where the porcelain is made, and the castle town of Karatsu on the north coast, are beyond Saga city and need a further change — allow a full day for each, not an afternoon.

Country: Far earlier — sometimes mid-afternoon. Ask at the stop when you arrive, not when you want to leave

ATMs: Use 7-Eleven or Japan Post for a foreign card. Bank ATMs are hit and miss
Carry: ¥10,000–20,000 on a day out of the city. Rural areas have very little

Lockers: At the main station, paid by IC card. They fill by mid-morning
Send it: Any convenience store will deliver it to your next hotel, usually next day. Cheaper than carrying it up stairs
At your inn: They will hold it before check-in and after check-out
