Tottori Sand Dunes鳥取砂丘

Sixteen kilometres of dunes fifty metres high, climbed barefoot. Camel rides at the entrance.

What Tottori is

The Tottori Sand Dunes run along the coast for sixteen kilometres and rise about fifty metres above the sea. You climb them barefoot to look out over open water.

You can ride a camel on them, sandboard down them, and stand in a place that looks nothing like the rest of the country. Next to the dunes is a museum of enormous sand sculptures, rebuilt each year and then destroyed.

Pick the season first and the days will arrange themselves.

March – May

The dunes are comfortable to climb before the sand gets hot. Green on Daisen from May.

June – August

The sand reaches 60°C in the afternoon

September – November

The best season: cool sand, autumn colour on Daisen, and crab from November.

December – February

Heavy snow on the Japan Sea side. Snow crab is the reason people come now.
